§ 118-2. Definitions.

  • The following words, terms and phrases, when used in this article, shall have the meanings ascribed to them in this section, except where the context clearly indicates a different meaning:

    Certificate means a certificate of public convenience and necessity issued by the city authorizing the holder to conduct a taxicab business in the city; there shall be one certificate for each vehicle to be used in such taxicab business.

    Common carrier permit committee means the review and permitting authority of the city composed of the chief administrative officer, the building inspector, and a representative of the police department and one councilman both to be appointed by the mayor, all to be voting members of the committee.

    Driver's permit means the permission granted by the city to a person to drive a taxicab upon the streets of the city.

    Holder means a person to whom a certificate of public convenience and necessity has been issued.

    Taxicab means a motor vehicle regularly engaged in the business of carrying passengers for hire on a 24-hour-per-day basis, excluding limousines, buses, vans or other vehicles capable of carrying nine passengers or more.

    Vehicle for hire means a motor vehicle regularly engaged in the business of carrying passengers for hire, including limousines and other vehicles for hire to carry passengers.
